Testimonials

Andrew Stern was a wonderful presence during his years at GMHC. He was an individual of graciousness, dedication, compassion, positive energy, intelligence, insight, care, kindness, courage and overall sweetness – he was always available to be of help when one needed any assistance. I will never forget all he did to defend and safeguard the agency on behalf of the thousands of people living with HIV and AIDS who accessed their care here. He was a hero.

 — Krishna Stone, Director of Community Relations, GMHC

During his tenure, the National Institute for Reproductive Health (NIRH) faced serious challenges. Andrew’s dedication, tenacity, wisdom and leadership skills allowed us to weather difficult times and to emerge healthy, vital and with a solid future. His work brought high level internal changes as he developed and implemented sophisticated policies and procedures, enhanced programmatic, operational and monitoring processes and strengthened both financial oversight and fiscal transparency. Andrew provided incomparable guidance on strategic planning, led the search and transition for new office space and worked passionately to ensure an equity perspective be applied to every aspect of our organization.

Andrew’s intellect, his empathetic nature, kindness, charm and sense of humor encouraged strong relationships with both board and staff – his unique ability to facilitate internal staff relationships and board/staff relationships was a benefit to us all.

 — Board of Directors, National Institute for Reproductive Health

Working with Andrew has propelled our agency to completing milestones in our strategic plan years ahead of schedule. Our vision is nearing reality faster than imagined when we first started this nonprofit agency. My context for leadership is transformed – from procrastination, worry and seeking perfection to boldly being action oriented, working in partnership to create teams and teamwork resulting in astonishing outcomes. Andrew is a knowledgable, passionate and empathetic partner on our journey.

Andy served as our Board President from 2007-2012. During his tenure, he led the board through a very, very important strategic planning process that transformed the board to better shepherd the growth and success of Long Island Gay and Lesbian Youth (LIGALY) into what is now the Long Island GLBT Services Network. Andy’s resilience and strength to overcome great challenges and accomplish all that he has done and be where he is today is admirable. It’s actually more than admirable, it’s inspiring. His leadership helped transform LIGALY into a world class organization that is able to support tens of thousands of young leaders.

 — David Kilmnick, President/CEO, Long Island GLBT Network

I first became acquainted with Andrew having joined the board of NARAL Pro-Choice New York and the National Institute for Reproductive Health. I always found him highly engaged, competent, responsive and a pleasure to work with. His communications skills are especially worth noting, I’ve always been impressed with his extraordinary writing capabilities. It was not until I became Board Chair, however, that I truly got to know the measure of the person. Andrew is a person of great intelligence, warmth and – most notably – principle and integrity. He quickly became a most trusted advisor and confidante, someone I could always rely on to be a straight shooter and strategic partner. I know firsthand that Andrew went out on several precarious limbs to safeguard the organization and ensure its stability and future. In truth, he put his job on the line to ensure the organization still exists and is thriving today. It may not be the norm for a board and staff member to become close, but Andrew has remained a good friend and respected colleague long after our departures from the organization. Any nonprofit would benefit from his rich level of expertise, his strategic mind and empathetic nature, his high ethical standards and his passionate commitment to the world around him.

— Jill Lafer, Former Board Chair, NARAL Pro-Choice New York

Andy was my supervisor when I interned at NARAL Pro-Choice New York in 2004. Our professional association only lasted a few months but the fierce passion of his convictions and the gentle kindness of his heart have stayed with me ever since. When I got a full-time job at NARAL Pro-Choice America shortly thereafter, he sent me a bouquet of flowers with a note welcoming me back to the family. When I got laid off from a different job years later, he was my first phone call—and sent me pints of ice cream that evening to lift my spirits. In the nearly two decades since we met, he has been my go-to source for advice and counsel on life, love, work and friendship countless times. And that is why when I needed a witness to sign my marriage Ketubah, he was the one and only choice.

I hope my kids grow up to be like Andy. And I hope I do, too. If you’re on this site, it’s because you have a feeling Andy can help. Trust that feeling. Start the conversation. The best advocate, partner, ally, and friend is waiting in the wings.
